Enjoy St. Augustine's Nature: Get Outdoors
Soaking up history in our nation's oldest city is not the only thing to do when you visit St. Augustine. There are numerous outdoor activities and many ecotourism options.
Imagine yourself surrounded by rich, lush greenery, listening to the peaceful sound of ocean waves or a cricket chirping in the grass. St. Augustine and its surrounding areas have exciting ecotourism options. What is ecotourism? Ecotoursim (ee-ko-toursim) is the practice of touring natural habitats in a manner meant to minimize ecological impact.
Camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, birding/nature watching and surfing can be done in St. Johns County. Neighboring counties Flagler, Volusia and Putnam also offer the same outdoor activities. St. Johns County boasts 42 miles of beautiful beaches to the east and the serene St. Johns River to the west. Both are home to Florida wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, alligators, countless species of fish and more than 260 bird species. Guana River State Park, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, Anastasia State Park and Fort Matanzas National Monument are ideal places for birding in the winter months, as well as all year long.
Whether you wish to rent a kayak and explore one of the many waterways, take a nature hike or bike down a shaded trail or on the beach, you can find a park or service that suits your needs. If fishing is part of your plan, you must obtain a freshwater and/or saltwater fishing license. Fishing can be an activity that does not impact the sea life if you are catching and releasing, and especially if you are on a kayak or canoe.
Florida is among the most ecologically diverse states in the United States. With more than 900 species of freshwater fish and land vertebrates, Florida supports an extraordinary array of wildlife. Most animals will remain away from trails; however, some of the creatures you may encounter include gopher tortoises, snakes, countless species of birds and insects, deer and wild boars in some areas. Ask a local park ranger or tour guide about wildlife in your specific area.
