MENEMSHA - A True Taste Of Island Character
Menemsha, the fishing hamlet of Martha's Vineyard, is considered by
both native residents and visitors as the most beautiful and picturesque spot on
the Island, abounding in natural beauty.
Menemsha remains unspoiled by the march of time. There are heaps of lobster
pots, nets, and other fishing gear on the docks and fishing craft of all kinds
fill the harbor.
Fishermen here rise at the first light of day, rev the motors on their
boats, and set off in search of the fish that provide their living.
Some boats are fiberglass outboard vessels; others are large steel-hulled
swordfishing boats. Some of the fishing boats tied up at Menemsha are draggers,
or boats that drag nets through the water to catch fish like sea bass, black
bass and bluefish. After draggers return from fishing trips, these nets are
spread out to dry over the decks of the boats.
Another type of fishing done out of Menemsha is swordfishing.
Nowadays, fishermen must travel far offshore to catch this fish, once
plentiful inshore. Swordfish, weighing anywhere from 120 to 400 pounds, may be
caught either by long-line set with hooks, or by harpoon in the traditional way.
Still another kind of fisherman at Menemsha is the lobsterman. Commercial
lobstermen use wooden lobsters pots designed to let shellfish enter, eat the
bait, and remain trapped there until the lobsterman collects them.
While commercial fishing attracts some visitors to Menemsha, there are
many other reasons to visit.
Venture up Coast Guard Lane to the U.S. Coast Guard Station, While on
Coast Guard Lane, be sure to stop into the headquarters of Dogfish Sea Kayaking
Co. and Creek Charters. Creek Charters offers sailing and water taxi service to
Gay Head (bikes welcome) and Dogfish Sea Kayaking Co. will allow you to explore
the inner reaches of the harbor and pond beyond via a guided sea kayak trip. If
you are hungry, the Home Port restaurant offers fine sit-down dining, the Galley
of Menemsha serves up everything from ice cream to lobster rolls, the Martha's
Vineyard Deli will tempt you with delicious sandwiches, and there are several
fish markets along Dutcher Dock if you have access to a stove.
On your way up from Dutcher Dock, be sure to stop into some of the craft
and antique stores that line the road.
The Soulagnet Collection offers the Martha's Vineyard Afghan. Country Inns
beckon as you head back up toward North Road if you wish to extend your stay.
Menemsha is not to be missed! Too many visitors pass by the little village of
Menemsha and miss a true taste of Island character. Take the extra time to
explore up-Island and be sure to include Menemsha on your route. You will be
very glad you did.
